Save with these foods

The list of value-added tax (VAT) zero-rated food items has been expanded effective 1 May, to cushion vulnerable households from the impact of tax measures.

The items added to the list of zero-rated foods include edible offal of sheep, poultry, goats, swine, and bovine animals; specific cuts such as heads, feet, bones and tongues; dairy liquid blend; and tinned or canned vegetables.

This comes after the National Treasury proposed increasing the VAT by 0.5 percentage points for the year to 15.5%, which will inevitably increase the cost of goods and services.
