Lily Mine dead 'must be retrieved'

ActionSA's annual commemoration event to mark the tragedy at Lily Mine in Barberton in 2016 began in fiery fashion.

The delegation's access to the road leading to the mine was delayed by burning wooden poles and tree branches.

With police assistance, the road has since been reopened, causing a minor delay in proceedings.

The annual 5 February commemoration is to remember the loss of the lives of three miners after a chamber collapse at the mine.

At least 76 employees were rescued through a ventilation shaft, but Solomon Nyirenda, Yvonne Mnisi and Pretty Nkambule were trapped in the lamp room.

Their remains have yet to be retrieved.
