Like Cape Town, Tshwane all set to introduce city cleaning tariff

Following the announcement by the DA-led City of Cape Town that it wants to implement a city-wide cleaning tariff, the coalition-led City of Tshwane will also implement a charge to households and businesses from 1 July.

Unlike Cape Town's tariff, which is linked to a property's municipal value, Tshwane's is a flat cleansing fee of R194.37 per month and will only be levied on households and businesses without a city waste account.

Residents and businesses in the metro can effectively not register for city-provided waste removal services and use alternative private providers.

This move seeks to remove this loophole. The fee will be charged to all households and businesses that have no waste account with the city, excluding agricultural holdings and vacant land with a value of less than R250 000.

Vacant land with a value higher than this amount will be charged the fee.

The city estimates that there are just under 200 000 residential properties and 60 000 businesses that do not use the city's refuse removal service.

The new fee is expected to generate an additional R540 million in revenue for the city.
