SURGE: MINISTER WORRIED BY KILLINGS OF FAMILY FOR PAYOUTS
There are a high number of insurance murders in the Eastern Cape, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu says, adding relatives and friends are targets.
Mchunu was in the province on Sunday during the ministerial safer festive season operations inspection tour and warned communities to be vigilant against the emerging crime trend.
"Evidence does point out that 67 people were murdered by either friends, family members or acquaintances who stand to gain monetarily - to cash in on large sums of money from banks and insurance companies," he said.
According to the minister, police had been able to identify stations where a high number of these insurance murders had been reported.
The Nelson Mandela Bay metro has several hotspot areas that have been flagged for insurance murders.
Kwanobuhle leads with 28 cases and KwaZakhele with 23.
