Firefighter claims station in crisis, but Tshwane hits back

The Citizen

|

August 14, 2025

Firefighters at Mabopane Fire Station in Tshwane are afraid to report problems to management for fear of being fired, one staff member said.

- Faizel Patel

The firefighter, who has been working there since 2001, painted a grim picture, claiming the station is plagued by extended bouts of power outages, no uniforms or combat boots, and workers fearing for their lives.

He told The Citizen, on the condition of anonymity, that the station does not have a backup generator for when they have no power. "We had a generator, but it broke and has not been fixed since 2022."

This leaves the station in complete darkness at night and a target for criminals, he said.
