'Vibrant' leisure venue plan for old glassworks

Sheepfolds Stables, the developer behind the Sunderland scheme, is now the preferred bidder for a project in South Tyneside

South Tyneside Council has confirmed that a preferred developer has been singled out to breathe new life into land at Harton Quay.

The news marks a major leap forward in the continued transformation of the area’s riverside and town centre. The successful bidder has been named as Building Design Northern (BDN) - the dynamic developer behind Sunderland's award-winning Sheepfolds Stables.

The architect, civil and structural engineering firm successfully transformed the former Grade II-listed Stables at Sheepfolds on Wearside, taking virtually derelict buildings to create the new venue now packing in the crowds for its food, drink and live events.

Now the company will work closely with the council over the next year, to shape its detailed proposals, secure planning permission and prepare the former Glassworks site for its conversion into an exciting new cultural and leisure destination.
