KIERAN Trippier is convinced that Newcastle United’s “results will turn” - and referenced his ill-fated debut as an example of how the club can recover from rock bottom.

The 35-year-old was the first person to go over to the away end after the 3-1 capitulation against Brentford, before dragging his teammates over to show some appreciation. However, despite some stinging criticism in the aftermath - not helped with an international break as fans stewed over it - Trippier has pointed to the fact United have come a long way in a short space of time.

When Trippier signed he suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Cambridge in the FA Cup on his debut in January 2022, but bounced back to help the club lift a trophy and qualify twice for the Champions League.

Trippier told BBC Newcastle: “Just look back at the first game against Cambridge. We understand the supporters’ frustration at the moment.

“But that comes with - how can I put it - how quickly we have transitioned as a team, as a club, as a fanbase.
