Black Cats keeper Robin Roefs dives low to his right to save Thierno Barry's penalty during Saturday's shootout
Le Bris again praised Sunderland's character, control and resilience as Sunderland reacted to defeat at Brentford by knocking Everton out of the FA Cup.The Black Cats triumphed on penalties thanks to goalkeeper Robin Roefs the inspired Dutchman correctly guessing which way to dive to deny James Garner, Thierno Barry and Beto in the penalty shootout, as Enzo Le Fée, Granit Xhaka and Luke O’Nien all converted for the visitors.
The tie went the distance after Garner had earlier equalised from the penalty spot in the 89th minute, cancelling out Le Fée’s superb first-half volley and forcing the contest to be decided from 12 yards.
It was tough on Sunderland. Everton’s penalty looked soft and would surely have been ruled out had there been VAR. But it was little more than a stay of execution for the Toffees.

No escaping your fitter enemy
EVERY new show needs a great opening. Something to forcefully grab the viewer's attention and maintain that vice-like grip for the next hour or so. The producers of Handcuffed: Last Pair Standing must have been rubbing their hands with glee when they saw the rough cut of this first episode: a glimpse of the countryside, a nice burst of birdsong, sounds of a man and a woman laughing and then... two people naked in a shower. Goodness me, and it's only just past the watershed too.
