Mason Mount opened the scoring for the hosts after eight minutes, before Benjamin Se’ko doubled their advantage just past the half-hour mark.

The Black Cats created opportunities of their own - Bertrand Traoré misjudged an early effort from Simon Adingra’s cross, while a penalty awarded for a high boot by SeSko on Trai Hume was overturned following a VAR review.

Goalkeeper Robin Roefs produced a string of fine saves in the first half to keep Sunderland in contention, but Chemsdine Talbi was denied twice late in the second 45 as the visitors pushed for a route back into the game.

Sunderland have scored just one goal away from home in the Premier League this season and the statistics show they will struggle on their travels this season.
