THE next Newcastle City Library Open Blitz takes place on Saturday, December 6 from 11am to 1.30pm and will see players gather from all around the North East for a rapid-fire tournament.

The monthly event, organised by Newcastle Chess Club, aims to create a friendly open space where everyone can play and compete in a convivial atmosphere.

Players of all strengths are welcome for friendly and competitive chess, and players can enjoy a friendly game over tea or coffee.

Play in the Blitz Open is fast and furious, with nine rounds at the rate of three minutes plus two seconds per move.

There will also be a Friendly Rapidplay, open to players with no rating or a rating over less than 1,600, played at the gentler rate of all moves in 10 minutes, plus five seconds per move.
