FIVE CHOSEN TO SHOWCASE THEIR WORK

- By BARBARA HODGSON

A FORMER carer and a council worker are among those being given a unique opportunity to create art for this year's Durham Lumiere.

The free light festival will be back in the city for the ninth time this autumn with a new collection of dazzling exhibits - and now it has revealed its pick of the first five talents who will be creating showpiece work.

The biennial event always features an array of light installations which transform the city streets and landmark buildings, attracting huge crowds of visitors over its run.

Alongside creations by established artists from the region and countrywide, the Lumiere team offers a chance for others to be involved too.

Its nationwide Brilliant scheme invites ideas for new installations from emerging and 'nontraditional creatives.

Artichoke, producer of the festival which is commissioned by Durham County Council, has chosen a first five commissions, from more than 150 applicants, for this autumn's event which, as previously reported, will run from November 13-15 with the aim of transforming the city 'into an illuminated art gallery.
