Massive fire in industrial unit forces main rail line to close

A major fire broke out in Gateshead yesterday.

The fire in an industrial unit was first reported yesterday afternoon, with plumes of smoke visible in the area near Birtley Town Football Club.

Fire crews arrived at the scene within minutes but said yesterday evening that they expected to be there for “several hours.”

Northumbria Police were also on the scene assisting firefighters.
