For most of those who lived through that memorable 12 months in time, it probably beggars belief that half a century has passed since then.

Our archive photographs recall some of what was going on in Newcastle in 1976.

Advertising itself as “the most modern shopping centre in Europe”, the sprawling Eldon Square opened its doors in March, bringing the American mall experience to the city and revolutionising retail in the region.

In February, Newcastle United reached Wembley for the second time in two years, but a flu-ridden team went down 2-1 to Manchester City in the League Cup final.
