Four taken to hospital as fire rips through home

FOUR people were taken to hospital after a devastating house fire broke out in Consett.

The blaze tore through the roof of the property on Richardson Way in the Berry Edge Estate yesterday morning.

Emergency services including Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) and Durham Constabulary were called to the scene shortly after 9.30am to tackle the blaze, with billowing smoke seen coming from the roof. A red and white fire cordon remained in place last night, with fire crews set to return over the coming days to ensure the safety of the building.
