Delight as £11m coastal cycle route is finished

NORTH Tyneside Council's environmental chief is "delighted" over the completion of the coastal cycle lane - with hopes further funding can be sourced for similar schemes.

Celebrations have been held after the completion of the £11m Seafront Sustainable Route - a cycle lane between St Mary's Lighthouse to Tynemouth Front Street.

Spectators had the opportunity to try out council provided bikes and tandems on the route, as well as a BMX display at the Spanish City.

The first phase of the work began in October 2023, with the first mile of the new cycle path linking the Front Street to Tynemouth Aquarium was launched in July 2024.

The scheme saw 6,219 metres of resurfaced footpaths, 4,675 metres of cycleway paved, and 72 new cycle stands. The route is two-way with a 20mph speed limit.
