NEXUS has installed new CCTV cameras on the Tyne and Wear Metro to help make the system safer.

- By OWEN YOUNGER

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness is aiming to improve the regional service, and the installation of the improved digital cameras is part of this.

There are 40 new cameras in total, which offer state-of-the-art picture quality which will make it easier to spot issues as they arise, as well as providing better footage to support with police investigations in identifying the people involved.

Nexus has said that the new technology is vital to providing greater customer reassurance on the transport system, as well as helping to deter vandalism and antisocial behaviour while supporting the work to tackle violence and intimidation against women and girls.

This £70,000 project builds on the previous £4.2m investment in 740 new CCTV cameras across the Metro's 60 stations in 2021, as part of the ongoing Metro Asset Renewal Programme.
