Council rent and heating bills set to rise by five per cent

RENT and heating bills for council house tenants in Newcastle will increase by almost 5% in April.

Senior councillors signed off on the hike in charges on Monday evening and said that the extra income would be used to improve Newcastle City Council's repairs and maintenance services.
The 4.8% rent increase at the 24,860 homes rented out by the council is the maximum permitted by the Regulator of Social Housing.
However, 74% of tenants are in receipt of either full or partial payments of Universal Credit or Housing Benefit and will see the rent hike met through benefits.
