A great day - but the world could see why the Tyne Bridge needs its big revamp

And certainly every year the photos of runners racing across this historic gateway to and from the city are among our favourites to publish as we cover the annual world-famous Great North Run half-marathon.

The Tyne Bridge is such an important part of the 13.1-mile route between Newcastle and South Shields - and it's one which puts Newcastle and Gateshead on the national and international stage every September as the Great North Run is reported on and celebrated worldwide.
