£120m development due to open in 2023 still unfinished

IT was hailed as one of the North East's biggest schemes in a decade - but the £120m Milburngate development remains unfinished three years after it was expected to open.

The project was expected to create office space for 400 jobs, as well as new homes, bars and restaurants, a cinema and a hotel on the city's riverside.

Building works started in the summer of 2019, but completion of the £120m development was delayed at the start of 2023 - weeks before planned openings for a Premier Inn, BrewDog bar and Everyman Cinema - when main contractor Tolent collapsed into administration.

Today, the site stands empty with padlocked construction barriers around the perimeter.
