CHESTER FC have paid tribute to a former player, Eddie Loyden, who has died at the age of 79.

Eddie hit the top with strike rate

The following appeared on the club’s website to recognise an important player in the history of Chester City...

A tall and rangy centre forward, Loyden had two spells with the club during the late 1960s and early 1970s and had an impressive goal scoring record of 48 goals in 99 Football League appearances.

Born in Liverpool he started his career as a junior at Blackpool and made his debut, in 1965, in a Division One fixture against Liverpool.

After a season at Carlisle he was snapped up by Peter Hauser, on a free transfer, in July 1967 making a dream debut with two headed goals in a 2-1 victory at Notts County.

He went on to score 22 goals in 37 games that season, including four in a 6-0 win over Lincoln City, and comfortably finished leading scorer for a struggling team that had to apply for re-election.
