Former Bangladesh President Mohammad Abdul Hamid returned to Dhaka in the early hours, sparking renewed focus on ongoing investigations into his alleged role during the violent crackdown on student protests in 2024.

Hamid, who served as president from 2013 until 2023, arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 1:30 am on Thai Airways flight TG-339 after a controversial departure from Bangladesh in May.
CONTROVERSIAL DEPARTURE AND RETURN Hamid's departure from Dhaka on May 8 raised eyebrows due to the unusual circumstances surrounding his exit. CCTV footage revealed that he entered the VIP terminal late at night and was allowed to pass through Gate No. 33, designated exclusively for secure airport personnel. This bypassed the mandatory security checks that even the interim president, Muhammad Yunus, must undergo. Such an exemption is typically reserved only for the sitting president, which Hamid was not at the time, provoking public outrage and suspicions of special treatment.
