WEST BENGAL GOVT TELLS SUPREME COURT, SEEKING STAY OF HIGH COURT JUDGEMENT SCRAPPING OBC CLASSIFICATIONS

The Supreme Court in the case The State Of west Bengal And Anr. Versus Amal Chandra Das observed wherein the West Bengal Government told the court that it was seeking stay of the Calcutta High Court’s judgment which quashed the classification of seventy seven communities as Other Backward Classes, OBCs.

The counsel, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for the State mentioned the matter before the bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, when the Court assembled after the lunch break.
Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal also stated that since the matter is not likely to be taken up today, the matter may be posted to a nearer date. It has also been submitted by the Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal that the State was seeking a stay of the High Court’s judgment as several persons were waiting in line to get admissions and jobs.
The bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud stated that the matter can be taken up on next Tuesday, August 27, 2024.
