Trump's Revenge Spree on Harvard Echoes Far Beyond Higher Education

The latest salvo came from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who abruptly revoked Harvard's certification to host international students. This decision, if not swiftly blocked by a court order, would have jeopardized the futures of thousands of young scholars and shaken the foundations of academic freedom in the U.S.

Though a federal court intervened with a temporary restraining order, the episode marks more than a dispute over university policy—it is part of a broader authoritarian playbook.

Harvard's refusal to comply with legally dubious federal demands in April 2025, including one asserting the government's authority to dictate "viewpoint diversity" among students and faculty, provoked what has become a political and legal assault.

In retaliation, the Trump-aligned administration froze $2.2 billion in research funding and opened multiple investigations into the university.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon accused Harvard of hiding foreign funding, while other officials claimed the university coordinated with the Chinese Communist Party and supported terrorism—without offering any evidence.

The barrage of accusations has not been limited to official channels.
