|May 07, 2025
Locking the electors is an ancient tradition believed to prevent external influence. Only cardinals under the age of 80 are eligible to vote in a conclave.
Ancient traditions, dating back over 2000 years, will be revived once again. With the passing of Pope Frances, the age-old process of electing a new Pope will commence in Vatican City, who will lead the Catholic Church with its over a billion members worldwide, will be chosen.
PROCESS: When a pope dies or resigns, the governance of the Catholic Church is transferred to the College of Cardinals. These cardinals are bishops and Vatican officials from around the world, personally selected by the pope.
To elect the pope, the cardinals hold a series of meetings at the Vatican called general congregations. During these meetings, they prepare for the upcoming election of the new pope, known as the papal conclave, which usually takes place 15 to 20 days after the pope's death. They also discuss the needs and challenges facing the Catholic Church globally. On 26 April 2025, Pope Francis was laid to rest in Rome. More than a hundred foreign dignitaries, including heads of state and government from around the world, gathered to honour the pontiff.
