India’s power generation surges to highest level in over a decade

These internal estimates from the federal power ministry, reviewed by Reuters, suggest the fastest pace of growth since at least 2011/12.

The uptick in electricity generation can be attributed to searing heatwaves and increased economic activity, driving an average annual growth rate of about 8% following the pandemichit year of 2020/21. India’s weather office forecasts more heatwave days than usual between April and June, potentially further boosting power usage and generation.

Fossil fuel-fired power is expected to play a dominant role, accounting for over 76% of total output for the second consecutive year. Coal-fired power output is projected to rise by 8.9% over the year, surpassing the growth expected in renewable energy output. Natural gas-fired electricity generation is also anticipated to increase by 10.5%.
