Canada witnesses record-high population growth fuelled by 'international migration'
The Business Guardian
|December 21, 2023
Canada has set a new record for population growth in the first nine months of the year, driven predominantly by international migration, surpassing the total growth seen in any other full year, including the remarkable figures from 2022, according to official data released on Tuesday by Statistics Canada.
-
As of October 1, Canada's population reached an estimated 40,528,396, marking an impressive increase of 430,635 people, or 1.1%, from July 1. This surge in population growth represents the highest rate witnessed in any quarter since the second quarter of 1957, when the country experienced a growth rate of 1.2%, adding 198,000 people.
The total population growth for the first three quarters of 2023, totaling 1,030,378 people, has already outpaced the growth observed in any other full-year period since the establishment of Confederation in 1867, even surpassing the record-breaking growth of 2022.
Notably, population expansion was evident across all provinces and territories, with the exception of a slight decrease in the Northwest Territories by 0.5%.
