A group of twelve Indian fishermen, who had been incarcerated in Sri Lankan jails, finally returned home to Chennai. This was the latest development in a series of releases following the safe return of fifteen fishermen from Rameshwaram the day before. The Sri Lankan Navy had arrested these fishermen as well.

Earlier in the week, another set of fifteen fishermen who were also previously detained in Sri Lankan prisons arrived at Chennai airport. All these fishermen, belonging to Rameshwaram and Mandapam, were escorted to their homes by the State Government Fisheries Department.
The incidents leading to these arrests involved a total of 64 fishermen from the same region, apprehended in three separate incidents allegedly for engaging in cross-border fishing activities. Besides detention, the Sri Lankan Navy seized their boats and fishing gear.
