Over 3,000 people are waiting for a home in Sunderland.
Figures from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) show there were 3,622 households on the city's social housing register, as of March-a 13% increase from 3,209 in 2024.
In England as a whole, over 1.3 million households were waiting for a social home-up by one per cent on the year before, and the highest number since 2014.
Housing charity Shelter said people have been pushed into homeless after successive governments have "failed to build enough genuinely affordable social rent homes".
