A hero who takes from the greedy rich and gives to the downtrodden poor is always a popular figure.

And a dashing blade from times past is what is served up in the Amazon Prime family series of Zorro season 1, now showing on the subscription channel.

With an age classification for guidance of 13+ the series is suitable for most viewers and makes for great family entertainment.

Based on the character created by Johnston McCulley, Zorro is set in 1834 and follows Diego de la Vega, a young landowner with a personal vendetta who also masquerades as Zorro, a masked vigilante who defends California's oppressed.

The story begins when the vigilante's father, Alejandro de la Vega - who was a defender of the weak - fights three unknown masked men who are killing people on his ranch outside his home.

When it looks as if all hope is lost Zorro appears and helps him before riding off into the dark starlit night.

After his departure Alejandro is killed by an unknown hitman.
