As Ollie Pope's unbeaten century lifted England to 209-3 - still 262 behind India's 471 all out in a frantic finale to the second day at the first Test, Ben Stokes' side repaired some of the damage from their opening-day chasing.

Pope's dashing 100 not out was an exhilarating effort after he had come to the crease just six balls into England's reply with the floodlights on full-beam.

Harry Brook is lucky to be there with him overnight after England's white-ball captain fell to a hideous shot in the final over of the day - but was reprieved by Jasprit Bumrah's no-ball.
