When O'Neill confronted Jose Mourinho and Porto in Spain he had the likes of Henrik Larsson, Chris Sutton, Stan Petrov and Neil Lennon for company.

Last Sunday at Ibrox, when Celtic had their backs to the wall for two hours, O'Neill brought on someone called Joel Mvuka as regulation time neared an end and extra-time loomed.

His arrival was a visibly shocking indictment of the decline that has been allowed to take place on the basis of grotesque player recruitment at Celtic Park.

I've heard all of the jokes about Mvuka having looked like the winner of a competition to get a game for Celtic.
