Vanity Fair at its glossiest and sauciest

GRAYDON Carter's When the Going Was Good is a sharp, stylish memoir that charts the rise of a media insider during the golden years of glossy magazines.

I do enjoy a glamorous look back at the heyday of publishing and this is an even more enjoyable read than Tina Brown and Si Newhouse's memoirs.

From a fresh-faced reporter at Time in the 70s to the swaggering editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair, Carter offers a front-row seat to a bygone era of long lunches, sprawling exes accounts and freedom that feels almost fictional in today's media landscape.
