Escaping pits of despair in a 90s minetown

SCOTS author Tom Newlands was an utterly brilliant guest at one of my Bookface Sip & Swap events in Glasgow.

This award-nominated, coming-of-age story, his debut novel, is to be adapted into a film. And it is as raw and electrifying as the decaying coastal town it portrays.

Set in a fictional Fife town in 1994, the novel immerses readers in a place where the pits have closed and opportunities scarce.

Yet, for 14-year-old Cora, Muircross is something to escape from, not accept.

Her restless mind dreams of a future beyond the “manky wee hellhole" she calls home.
