Hits are an antidote to global conflict

- BY DAN VEVERS

IT'S hard to turn on the news and not be appalled by the images of bombs and bloodshed around the world.

At the start of the year, it was estimated there were 11 wars in 35 countries, including Ukraine and Gaza.

Two weeks ago, the US and Israel began their war on Iran with a daily and nightly barrage of missiles. But where there is war, there are those who rail against violence in song and tell of the futility of armed conflict.

Here are just 10 top antiwar songs...

GIVE PEACE A CHANCE

John Lennon and Yoko Ono 1969

Perhaps the most famous protest song ever, it was recorded in a Quebec hotel room during their famous bed-in protests against war.

This was Lennon's first solo single and it was quickly adopted by the anti-Vietnam War movement. Sung by fans outside his apartment in New York after his 1980 murder. Key line: All we are saying is give peace a chance.

TRAVELIN' SOLDIER

The Chicks 2002

The all-female band - formerly The Dixie Chicks - have always been the rebels of US country.

They came in for a lot of flak after slating President George W Bush and the invasion of Iraq. Their cover of the song tells of a girl's heartbreak after her soldier love dies in Vietnam. Key line: I cried, never gonna hold the hand of another guy.

WAR

Edwin Starr 1970
