Get tough on benefit fraud

WHEN Scotland started taking greater control over benefits from Westminster, the SNP promised a more compassionate system.

There was good reason for that. In their last spell in government, the Tories launched a brutal assault on welfare in the name of austerity.

We saw hated policies like the bedroom tax, rape clause and two-child cap as the Department for Work and Pensions oversaw bleak fit-to-work assessments for disabled people.

All aimed at cutting public spending by making life harder for some of society's most vulnerable.

But in Scotland now, there are legitimate fears we are going too far the other way.
