Dealing with wrist problems
Sunday Island
|December 21, 2025
Wrist problems are among the most common yet most underestimated musculoskeletal complaints seen in clinical practice.
-
The wrist is a remarkably complex structure that enables precision, strength and fluid movement, allowing humans to write, work, lift, type and perform countless daily tasks. Its complexity also makes it vulnerable. Even minor injuries or repetitive strain can lead to pain, stiffness and long term dysfunction if not recognised early and managed properly.
The wrist is made up of multiple small bones, intricate ligament systems, tendons, nerves and blood vessels working in close coordination. Because of this tight anatomical arrangement, swelling or injury in one area often affects others. Pain in the wrist is therefore not a single condition but a symptom that may arise from trauma, overuse, inflammation, nerve compression or degenerative change. According to specialists, understanding the cause is far more important than merely suppressing the pain.
Frequently misdiagnosed or ignored
Dr Tim Tobias Lögters, Head of the Wrist Surgery Division of the German Society for Trauma Surgery, has repeatedly emphasised that wrist disorders are frequently misdiagnosed or ignored in their early stages. “The wrist is often treated as a small joint, but functionally it is one of the most demanding joints in the body. Delayed diagnosis can turn a manageable injury into a chronic disability,” he notes.
One of the most frequent causes of wrist problems is trauma, particularly falls onto an outstretched hand. Such injuries may lead to fractures of the distal radius or carpal bones, ligament tears or cartilage damage. While fractures are usually detected promptly, ligament injuries are often missed. These untreated ligament injuries can later cause instability, chronic pain and early arthritis. Dr Lögters explains that persistent pain after a fall should never be dismissed. “If wrist pain does not improve within a reasonable time, further evaluation is essential. Ligament injuries are subtle but can be devastating if untreated,” he says.
