And despite Everton losing Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Orel Mangala to injury, they held on.

It took plenty of dogged defending, determination and a large dash of time-wasting, which contributed to an ugly melee at the final whistle.

But returning Toffees boss David Moyes (right) now has back-to-back wins, and Everton a seven-point cushion to the bottom three.

Moyes said: "We've had a difficult day and, if we'd actually come away and not got a result today, it would have felt much sorer because of the couple of injuries we've picked up.
