When Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, both medicine and healthcare were revolutionised. In the decades that followed, diseases, infections and deaths that were thought to be incurable were suddenly treatable, and millions of lives were saved.

It set the foundation for Britain to become a world leader in life sciences. But we must never take that position for granted.
