New Audi a solid SUV with soul

Premium SUVs are big business for car manufacturers, and Audi produces some of the best. Back in 2008, the firm launched its Q5 SUV, and it sold a total of 1.6 million units worldwide - making it one of Audi's best-sellers.

However, fast-forward nearly two decades and the Q5 is moving into its third generation, competing with the Mercedes GLC and BMW X3.

WHAT'S NEW?

There's a redesigned exterior and interior, plus mechanical changes.

All engines come with mild-hybrid technology, and inside there are higher levels of standard equipment.

Also, mid-spec cars and above get the addition of Audi's rear-seat bench plus, so the back seats slide to create more boot space or legroom.

A performance-focused SQ5 variant is on offer, too, with a larger petrol engine and adaptive air suspension.

WHAT'S UNDER THE BONNET?

The Q5 will be available with a choice of three engines. We drove the 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel unit, which accelerates 0-60mph in 7.2 seconds, with a top speed of 140mph.

Other engines include a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 201bhp and a beefier 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine in the SQ5 variant.

All versions also come with a Quattro all-wheel-drive system with a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

WHAT'S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?
