Monarch's horse fails to win the day but does the royals proud in their bid for a racing Classic
THE King and Queen just missed out on a racing coup to mark the Coronation year, as they cheered their horse Desert Hero to a respectable third place in the St Leger yesterday.
Camilla looked particularly nervous watching the track, while Charles - grasping binoculars - was shown on the TV coverage of Britain's oldest Classic horse race saying: "Come on, come on." The royal runner could not catch the Irish winner Continuous, ridden by jockey Ryan Moore, in the finishing straight at Doncaster.
The King, 74, and Queen, 76 - who paired two different hats with an eggshell blue dress - were joined at the event by their racing manager John Warren.
The couple had travelled down from the Balmoral estate in Scotland, where they had privately marked the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
