THE WRITER behind ITV's compelling dramatisation of the Post Office scandal says she has been “apologising ever since” to all those people she was unable to include in it.
Mr Bates vs The Post Office screenwriter Gwyneth Hughes revealed: “This was a huge story, running over 20 years and ruining the lives of many hundreds of people the length and breadth of the UK. I had to find a way to fit as many of them in as I could, into a narrative that would make sense, without the programmes feeling rushed or over-stuffed.”
In the end, she settled on eight strong stories to serve as the focal point for the drama out of the hundreds of subpostmasters affected by one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in British history.
Gwyneth spoke to as many victims as she could to make sense of the “complexity and the hideous scale” of the scandal.
But the Tom Jones and Honour writer admitted the decisions over what to include and leave out were the “hardest part” for her.
