British-bred blueberries on the way

MOVE over, the humble Scottish strawberry — there’s a new, colour-ful rival about to hit town.

The first British-bred blueberry has been grown north of the border after a decade of research.

Previously, 90% of the purple-coloured fruit consumed in this country has been imported with the remainder grown here from varieties developed abroad.

Now a new variety, called Highland Charm, has been created by the James Hutton Institute, a fruit breeding centre in Invergowrie, just outside Dundee on the north bank of the Firth of Tay.
