Big clear-up begins after ‘worst storm in ten years’

STORM Eowyn was “probably the strongest storm” to hit the UK in at least 10 years – and probably the most intense in “20 or 30” for some areas, the Met Office said yesterday.

Yellow weather warnings for rain, wind, and snow and ice remain in place for much of the country today, after a rare red alert was issued on Friday for Scotland and Ireland.

Wind speeds broke records with 114mph in Mace Head in Co Galway. A 100mph gust was recorded at Drumalbin, South Lanarkshire, and the wind hit 96mph at Alnwick, Northumberland.

It came as the man killed when a tree fell on his car in Co Donegal was named as Kacper Dudek, 20.
