Residents to receive cold weather cash

HUNDREDS of thousands of households will receive Cold Weather Payments from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) as a result of cold weather last week.

The DWP has activated the payments in nearly 250 postcode areas in England and Wales, including in the Stockport area.

More than half a million households across the UK will be eligible for the payments, which will see them receive £25 towards the cost of heating their homes in the next week.

The new payments were triggered on January 7 in a total of 246 postcode areas, including Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire and parts of Wales and Northern Ireland.

The latest payments will be sent to an estimated 532,000 households, including around 336,000 in Greater Manchester.

In the previous week's round of payments no-one in Greater Manchester qualified for the financial help despite the cold weather.
