Weekend offers a perfect chance to embrace heritage

WITH all that’s being reported in the news of late one press release that may have gone unnoticed is that next week we recognise Owain Glyndwr Day here in Wales.
-
Owain Glyndwr Day is held annually on September 16 in Wales, as a celebration of the last native Prince of Wales and founder of the first Welsh parliament.
It may not be covered by national news but thousands in Wales celebrate the life and legacy of the “rebel” Prince of Wales.
Owain ap Gruffydd commonly known as Owain Glyndwr was a Welsh leader who led a long-running war of independence to end English rule in Wales during the late Middle Ages.
A typical reaction maybe to question why all the fuss about someone who lived in the mid 1300s through until the early 1400s but it’s important to respect the history of our nation.
Our neighbours in England have a vast array of historic sites to visit, amazing sites.
From iconic landmarks like Stonehenge, a mysterious prehistoric stone circle, and the Tower of London, a historic fortress and former prison, to significant architectural marvels such as Westminster Abbey, a site of royal events and burials.
Other must-see locations which many from Wales including myself have visited include the Roman Baths in Bath, the extensive Hadrian's Wall, and the industrial heritage of the Ironbridge Gorge.
The significance of next week's date has not been missed by Cadw as Cadw marks Owain Glyndwr Day with free entry for under-17s to many of Wales’s most historic castles and monuments for free tomorrow.
