'Street racer' reached 100mph before crash

Kyron Farrell drove at speeds in excess of 100mph as he made a run for the motorway before crashing.

Locking Farrell up for 16 months, a judge at Swansea Crown Court said he wanted the message to be heard loud and clear that people who engage in street racing and similar behaviour can expect immediate imprisonment.

Regan Walters, prosecuting, told the court that on the night of Sunday, March 16 this year police in Swansea and Neath were dealing with reports of “car meets” in progress.

He said as part of the response an officer in an unmarked car first attended the Llansamlet area before going to Milland Road industrial estate in Neath where he found two vehicles side-by-side in the road apparently ready to race with a crowd of some 100 people looking on.

The court heard that as the officer approached, a VW Polo being driven by Farrell which had been stationary on the A474 slip-road reversed away up the slip and made off.

The officer followed the defendant onto the A465 where Farrell hit 110mph as he raced towards the Llandarcy M4 junction.

Farrell went around the Llandarcy roundabout a number of times before taking the B4290 towards Jersey Marine - however he quickly did a U-turn and returned to the roundabout before taking the on-slip of the eastbound M4.
