Old rivals Newport and Cardiff meet inthe SRC's big game of the weekend

NEWPORT aim to continue making Rodney Parade an impregnable fortress when they host their biggest rivals, Cardiff, in Super Rygbi Cymru tonight.

The two famous clubs first met at Rodney Parade on 19 January 1878, when Newport won, and a year later played the first floodlit game at the same venue. That game ended in a draw.

The fact they are still playing at least twice a year 147 years on is amazing, and something the players on both sides cherish.

“The players always get excited about playing at Rodney parade and especially in this fixture. There is so much history involved, and so many great stories surrounding the games gone by,” said Newport head coach Ty Morris.

“More importantly looking at this week’s game, we are unbeaten at Rodney Parade of the past five years and want to extend that run.
