Greyhound racing ban plans criticised

WORK around a proposed law to ban greyhound racing in Wales has been strongly criticised by a Senedd committee.

The Welsh Government announced plans to outlaw the sport by 2030 earlier this year and a bill which would ban the sport is being considered by the Senedd.

Deputy first minister and rural affairs minister Huw Irranca-Davies previously said the government was “taking decisive action to prioritise animal welfare” after listening to the public and considering evidence, including about injuries and fatalities among dogs.

But the Senedd’s culture committee has criticised the proposed Prohibition of Greyhound Racing (Wales) Bill, raising concerns about how quickly the legislation has been introduced and raising concerns over an apparent lack of evidence.

It said the shortened timetable to introduce the law meant there has not been enough time to get timely answers to “key questions”, with some confusion remaining.

Plaid Cymru's Delyth Jewell, who chairs the committee, said this is “not how good law is made”.
