What Pirates can expect from Ouaddou
Soccer Laduma
|June 26, 2025
When Orlando Pirates recently announced Abdeslam Ouaddou as their new coach on Monday, they signalled the start of a bold new chapter. For many South African football fans, Ouaddou’s name may still be relatively new, but his impact has already been felt in the Betway Premiership. From rescuing Marumo Gallants from relegation in a campaign which started by defeating the Buccaneers in his very first league game, Ouaddou’s short yet significant spell in local football has shown that he’s not here to merely fill a vacancy, he’s here to build. A former Moroccan international with a decorated playing career across Europe, Ouaddou brings both pedigree and a no-nonsense approach to coaching. His rise has been steady and deliberate, marked by clarity, discipline, and a firm belief in professional standards. So, what can Pirates expect from the 46-year-old new tactician? Find out, as we discuss this key appointment in this Soccer Laduma feature by Masebe Qina.
Abdeslam Ouaddou made a clear statement in a recent interview with Soccer Laduma, edition 1427, when he said: “I’m not a fireman. I am a man who builds sustainable projects.”
This mindset sets him apart. He isn’t interested in short-term fixes or survival mode appointments. What he demands is structure, vision, and professionalism - and at a club of Orlando Pirates’ stature, he’s likely to find those tools. If Marumo Gallants lacked the infrastructure to match his expectations, Pirates will offer a far more fertile environment to implement his ideas.
Ouaddou made it clear he wants the right tools to succeed, in discussing his time with Gallants: “I was managing the team and writing a project proposal for the next season. I gave the report to the club. But are they able to respond to my wishes? I did not resign. The mission was to save the club.”
At Pirates, the environment will be vastly different. With a high-performance department, international training camps, and modern facilities, Ouaddou now has the platform to enact his full vision.
Tactical maturity and defensive solidity
When the Moroccan coach took over Gallants in March this year, the team was languishing in 15th place. They had just lost 8-1 to Pirates a few weeks earlier under different leadership. But in Ouaddou’s very first league match in charge, Gallants defeated the very same Pirates 2-0 in a result that stunned the league. That moment, for many observers, marked a turning point not just for Gallants, but for Ouaddou himself in South African football. His game plan was clear, his tactical instructions precise.

I'm not happy about it
Marumo Gallants may have fallen just short in the Carling Knockout Final, but their spirited run to the showpiece at a sold-out Peter Mokaba Stadium reminded many of the club's fighting identity.

Let's become role models
We live in an era where positive role models can be scarce, which means the next generation feels lost as there are no examples they can relate to in their immediate communities.
