What needs to be done in women’s football

University of Pretoria Football Club Operations Manager Pearl Mosoane is an experienced administrator who knows women’s football inside out, having served on the SAFA Women’s Standing Committee between 2008 and 2011, among other leadership positions.

The Mpumalanga-born biochemistry graduate, who also sits on the board of the Fani Madida Foundation, has a proven track record and firsthand knowledge of the behind-the-scenes activities in the world of football - from logistics to budgeting, marketing and communication. In this interview with Soccer Laduma’s Mzoxolo Budaza, Mosoane addresses a number of topics including what needs to be done to take women’s football to where it should be, challenges faced by women in football, as well as progress made since readmission to international football.

So, there’s no X plus Y equals Z ~ there’s no one solution that can solve everything. What is needed is for us to be patient with the game. The domestic game still has some way to go in terms of providing the level of competition we need to have a competitive Banyana Banyana. That is why we have the current squad of players who are graduates of various universities. Through the universities, they were able to play at the World Student Games against the likes of Japan and Germany. So, that experience was invaluable to the type of performances we've been seeing from Banyana Banyana right now. But now they are in the latter parts of their careers, so I think where we neglected things was in developing a competent next level of players - the next group who will take over from the likes of Jermaine Seoposenwe and Thembi Kgatlana.
